Day 10 (Favorite Fighter Anime): Soul Eater
Well looks like it’s time for a review!
"A sound soul rests within a sound mind and a sound body"
That quote couldn’t be more right, and I really enjoyed this show.
Really cool art direction. I might as well add that the mangaka is also good at drawing unlike the guy behind Attack on Titan. I really like some of the artbook pieces for this show. Ranging from very cool colors, to very cool details, compositions etc.
Engaging main and side characters. My favorite character being Death the Kid, and the American stereotype sisters (the one true thresome I will ever approve of) for the chemistry they had, as well as Maka and Soul.
Nice blend or comedy, horror, and action. I actually wish they would have focused on the cosmic horror aspect a bit more. The lovecraftian themes like “madness” being sort of a disease were also some of my favorite aspects of the show.
Black Star was the base-breaker for me. I almost quit watching the series because of his incredibly cacophonic voice as well as his obnoxious personality. It later turns out that it’s sort of a cover-up for the fact that his family background is VERY messed up, which I did appreciate as far as character development goes, but there was not enough build up of it to make the him more appealing. On the other hand Tsubaki was cool.
The villainess Medusa was great. A really love-to-hate villain. The way she played a big portion of the cast like a fiddle and how she got away with almsot everything makes me add her on my top villains list. Her paralells to the devil were also interesting, Snake woman tempting a man into madness and stuff, she was eve holding an apple in a scene. So much for subtleness haha.
The biggest pet peeve I had is the shounen nature of the series. Which means; to much action. Some battles lasting even three episodes. Why the need to drag scenes Peter Jackson style. We could really do without that. Which also meant that too much action made less time for more non-volent character interactions too.
Oh and the fanservice as well, can always do without that.
